A block of flats in Gabalfa is due to be demolished despite objections from local residents.

The 1950s apartments on the corner of Whitchurch Road and New Zealand Road will be knocked down after a Welsh Assembly Inspector gave permission.

Cardiff Council’s planning committee had refused permission for the flats to be destroyed, but the Assembly government has overruled them to grant planning for 40 new apartments on the site.

Gabalfa councillor, Ed Bridges, who presented a petition against the planning application, said: “Like many local residents, I am distraught that this scheme is being allowed to go through. The existing pretty block of large flats provides much-needed family accommodation in our area. To rip it down and replace with an ugly, boxy set of tiny apartments with inadequate amenity and parking is a disgrace.”

The 40 new apartments will provide 35 parking spaces.
