Protesters at a Unite Against Facism rally in Swansea in October last year

Saturday 5th June is gearing up to be a busy day in Cardiff, with Wales hosting South Africa at the Millennium Stadium and the Stereophonics preparing to rock the Cardiff City Stadium.

Resources are bound to be stretched and many fans will be arriving by train to the city centre, and could be greeted by a march by the Welsh & English Defence League (WDL/EDL).

The group is due to be marching at lunchtime in the city centre and massing outside Cardiff Central Station. A rival march has been setup by campaign group Unite Against Fascism and will be marching through the city centre at the same time in opposition to the protest.

Unite Against Fascism are arranging a rival march and are calling on Cardiff City fans to support them.

A leaflet from the group states: “Cardiff City fans have been linked with the WDL/EDL. Bluesbirds vs the Nazis has been set up to show that the majority of CCFC fans are opposed to racism and facism.”

Mark Serwotka, General Secretary of PCS union, said: “The WDL/EDL hold their demos to intimidate and divide us. As a Cardiff City fan, I call on everyone to unite and protest against the WDL/EDL’s attempts to whip up racism.”

The Unite Against Facism protesters are due to meet at 11 AM at Roald Dahl Plas on Saturday 5th June 2010 and march through Butetown and the city centre, finishing at City Hall with a rally at 1 PM.

Previous Welsh Defence League protests have been held in Wrexham and Swansea, both towards the end of 2009.

June 5th will also see the Cardiff School of Art & Design summer show taking place at Howard Gardens and the UWIC Llandaff campus.

I have been to an EDL demo to show my opposition to the Islamification of the UK. The EDL are not Nazis. They are not fascists. Their opposition to radical Islam is not racist, as Islam is not a race, it is a religion, and a totalitarian, supremacist ideology.

The WDL are not racist. The WDL march in Swansea was hijacked by Neo-Nazis. All ethnic minorities are welcome to join the WDL march on June the 5th. as long as you support britain and you are worried about the spead of Islam.

Here is proof the EDL/WDL are not racist.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wyGDe6JUO6M

Also what biased reporting from this Ed Walker. He should have kept his opinion out of the article.

I don't see where there is any opinion stated in this article at all, it is fact based; giving times, starting points etc.

David, Islam is no more totalitatian or 'supremacist' than christianity. And if you're not racist then why do you oppose any new mosques and use racist language at your demos? You will be severely outnumbered by the counter demonstrations anyway – Cardiff will come out united to show you we are proud of our communities and are willing to stand up for them against people like the edl who spread lies and hate.

The Nazis persecuted different kinds of groups – they gassed Jews and Roma, but they also attacked disabled people, trade unionists and political opponents. I don't think the point is whether Islam is a race or not. The point is that one group – muslims – are today being singled out for persecution by the EDL (whose members, by the way, were pictured in Swansea giving Nazi salutes – fascists, who us?) and it would be a mistake to imagine they would stop at muslims.

By the way: Cardiff Communities Against Racism (CCAR), a broad non-partisan organisation bringing together and coordinating among national campaigns like Unite Against Fascism and Searchlight and local groups such as universities, mosques, churches, and individuals, will be holding its next meetings:

Thursday 27 May & Thursday 3 June, Nelson Mandela room, 4th floor Cardiff University Students' Union, Park Place, Cardiff.

All are welcome to attend; we are grateful to Cardiff Uni Students' Union for its support and endorsement of our campaign.

Support Cardiff Peace Vigil. Peace Vigil initiated by the Inter-faith Council for Wales to be held on the Senedd building steps in Cardiff Bay at 7.30 p.m. on Friday 4th June to openly celebrate the city’s cultural diversity and to reject any attempts to harm community relations in Wales’ capital city.

The group is open to all – of different faiths and of none – who share the Peace Vigil’s values. Supported by members of Cardiff Humanists.

The most despicable thing about this WalesOnline article is its title – ‘Racist march due on day of music and rugby in Cardiff’. No questions asked or answered. It is a racist march. It’s not even a case of ‘some claim the EDL is simply racist’ or ‘they claim to be only against Islamic militancy’, as you get in other papers. This paper is either taking a given far-left line on the EDL/WDL or it has simply accepted, no questions asked, the far-left line of UAF. This is really bad. Many members of the EDL have been non-racists – or even anti-racists! – all their lives and then along come UAF and call them ‘racists’. Worse than that, a regional news outlet, WalesOnline, does exactly the same.

Weren’t many English football fans against the Welsh? Wasn’t there a lot of trouble between English and Welsh football fans once? And yet English and Welsh footballs fans are jettisoning ancient rivalries and getting together in Cardiff on June the 5th to fight the enemy of all Brits and indeed all Europeans – militant Islam. Yet the WalesOnline calls them ‘racist’. Again, no questions asked. And no EDL questions answered!

Because the WDL and the EDL have a strong football-fan base, which really means a strong English and Welsh base as well, the UAF are also trying to recruit football fans. The problem is. The EDL didn’t ‘recruit’ football fans. It was a case of football fans creating the EDL. No one else was interested at the time! So UAF is off on a looser from the start, which is not to say they won’t get three or four football fans on board their train to revolution and radicalisation. UAF realises that Cardiff City fans have links with both the WDL and the EDL. Thus they have even talked of ‘the Bluebirds vs the Nazis’. Pathetic! One UAF spokesman said that ‘the majority of CCFRC fans are opposed to racism and fascism’. That’s fine. EDL and WDL supporters are against fascism and racism. So no problem there mate!

Another UAF fan, Mark Serwotka, the General Secretary of the PCS union (whatever that is), said that the ‘WDL/EDL hold their demos to intimidate and divide us’. No they don’t! The EDL demos are fantastic showcases of solidarity and fellow feeling. It is the Islamists and Leftist militants who intimidate and divide us. The Muslim gangs in Bradford, Blackburn, the Tower Hamlets, etc. also divide us. To leftists like Serwotka the phrase ‘divide us’ is just a leftist cliché that is used, all too often unthinkingly and in the Trot rant manner. It’s all based on the well-worn leftist theory of ‘divide and rule’. The phrase is now just rhetoric. And if anyone ‘whips up’ anything it is the militant Muslims, the SWP and UAF. They love conflict and division. They thrive on it. They need it for the revolution and for radicalisation.

    KEEP CARDIFF NAZI FREE!
Here are shocking photographs of the English Defence League (pretending to be the Welsh Defence League, but most of them came from outside of Wales) demonstrating in Swansea last year. These pictures appeared in mainstream media and local journalists reported being shocked to see grown men making Nazi sieg-heil salutes in front of children and families. It is no wonder when mainstream media saw the EDL with their own eyes and what they are about that they report it.

The clowns who were seig heiling last year have had visits from police telling them if they turn up this time they will be arrested – the reason for these two demos is not explained by the Echo, most of who's journos are members of Searchlight Cymru – that says it all. They never contact WDL for comments they simply trot out nonsense from Communists like Leanne Wood and light fingered MP Peter Hain. You wait for this demo, we have Indian and mixed race speakers, a stewarding system to stop trouble and the police have said any Commies trying to kick off wil be arrested no questions asked. Its great being us.
