The potholes in the Hailey Park tennis courts before repair work started

Tennis courts in Llandaff North are being urgently repaired ahead of the summer holidays after residents and a local MP criticised the state of them.

The courts at Hailey Park were suffering from cracks in the tarmac and were declared ‘unsafe’ due to large potholes.

Cardiff North MP, Jonathan Evans, had written to Councillor Nigel Howells, responsible for sport, leisure and culture, to demand action.

Mr Evans said: “I hope the Hailey Park courts are back in use before too long as my wife and I frequently used them  over 20 years ago!”

Local resident Dan Allsobrook took the photo above and the others in this Flickr set while cycling past on the way home from work after being stunned by the state of the tennis courts.

Coun Howells tweeted yesterday that work had started on repairing the tennis courts and they hoped to complete by July 23rd.

This follows the story where one resident found they couldn’t play tennis at Heath Park before 12 NOON due to budget cuts.

I am pleased to be able to advise you that funding is being made available from our 2010 / 2011 budgets to carry out a programme of works including pot hole repairs, filling and making flush cracked areas plus new line markings. This will allow all six courts to be given a moderate ‘make over’ complimented with new replacement nets. Parks Services will then introduce a rolling programme of annual weed spraying and periodic mechanical sweeps. Weather permitting, it is anticipated that the work will be complete by 23rd July.
