What will Cardiff be like in 2020?

Cardiff council are consulting on how residents want the city to be in 2020.

The answers will help form the city’s Local Development Plan, the document that helps decide where new developments are built in Cardiff.

A few months ago we asked some alternative voices in the city to tell us their view of Cardiff in 2020, inspired by the thinkARK workshop we attended as part of their Empty Shops project.

Peter Cox from the Cardiff Civic Society gave us his view, mainly around the architecture of the city. Edmund Schluessel, from the Cardiff Against the Incinerator campaign wanted to see a city for the workers. Julian Sykes from the thinkARK group wanted to see people doing more voluntary work in the city. The 2020 consultation is powered by the vision the council has developed for the city, which states:

“By 2020… Cardiff will be a world class European capital city with an exceptional quality of life and at the heart of a thriving city region

“Within this vision there are 7 key outcomes which we want to achieve to improve the quality of life for all people in Cardiff:

– People in Cardiff are healthy
– People in Cardiff have a clean, attractive and sustainable environment
– People in Cardiff are safe and feel safe
– Cardiff has a thriving and prosperous economy
– People in Cardiff achieve their full potential
– Cardiff is a great place to live, work and play
– Cardiff is a fair, just and inclusive society”

A series of public meetings have been arranged for people to give their views about the future of the city.
