Today marks 40 years since Cardiff City recorded a famous 1-0 win over Real Madrid in the Cup Winners Cup.

A packed Ninian Park saw the Bluebirds power to a stunning victory with the legendary Brian Clark scoring the only goal of the game.

To celebrate we’ve raided the archives and found below the special supplement produced by the South Wales Echo to celebrate the win.

Also, black and white photos from the game itself, as the famous 11 took down Real Madrid.

Plus we’ve got the squad itself who enjoyed glory in Cardiff before losing the return league and going out of the competition.

What are your memories of 1971? Were you at the game? Let us know your memories in the comments below

I was there! I was eighteen years old and in those days a fervent City fan. I was on the Bob Bank, just on the halfway line. Must have been 50,000 people there that night. To see the mighty Real Madrid in itself was a thrill in those days. And to see them beaten by second division City was unbelievable. We actually thought we could win the Cup Winners’ Cup that year. Brian Clark: good player and a nice chap. My niece nursed him in his final illness.
