Opinion: Leaving the city, a Cardiff Bucket List

What would you say are the most important things to do in Cardiff before you leave? Well I’ve been set that challenge.

For over eight years I have loved living in Cardiff. After arriving as a student in 2003 I decided this was the place for me and I settled in for good. But there have been some rather timely happenings that have given me more than a little nudge to move to pastures new. For example, losing my job and becoming homeless.

I’ll be moving to my boyfriend’s in the Midlands, but it is really hard leaving Cardiff behind. I have friends here whose houses I can go to uninvited and know that I am always welcome. I have a friend who calls me her wife, and a friend who when I became homeless gave me a home. I know all the great places to eat and drink, where the best pasta is, where the best mojito is made. Everywhere I go I see someone from somewhere in my life here. And I love Wales.

But the move won’t be so bad. For three years I have had a ‘weekend’ relationship hurtling back and forth down the M50. When I move I won’t have to pack and unpack, and pack and unpack. I can see my friends on Saturday and my boyfriend on Wednesday. I can have pets. I will always have my full wardrobe at my disposal. I can do housework on Saturdays and chill out on Thursdays.

But before I feel I am able to leave, I am determined to do everything in Cardiff that makes Cardiff, Cardiff. I need to visit all the places that should be visited, eat all the best food that can be eaten and see all the people that should be seen.

So, here is my Leaving Cardiff Bucket List, a list of all the must-do things for myself, fellow Cardiffians and visitors alike:

Hi Claire, I really enjoyed reading your bucket list especially as throughout the past few weeks I have been trying to compile a Student Bucket List on my cardifference.co.uk radio show, you can find the updated list here http://cardifference.blogspot.com/2011/04/student

Some are very similar but it might give you some others ideas and I hope you don’t mind but I am going to pinch some of yours; love the eating and drinking guide, bus tour, brewery tour (never realised you could do that) and opera suggestions.

It also relates closely with my Kieran I want project that you might be interested in reading about http://cardifference.blogspot.com/2011/03/kieran-

    Good luck with it all

That’s a lot of things for an unemployed, homeless person – but good luck!
Everything I could think of you seem to have covered.

Hi Kieran, thanks very much. Of course you can pinch some – that’s what they are there for! Glad I can be of help!
I’m going to snoop at yours now…
