An event for fans of Doctor Who and Torchwood to meet their heroes is coming to Cardiff this summer.

Diffcon will feature big names from the sci-fi world including Eve Myles, Kai Owen and Ray Holman all expected to attend.

Laura Swan, Diffcon organiser, said: “It’s a way for fans of Doctor Who and Torchwood to meet the actors from the shows and ask questions of those who write them.

“When we were organising the event we were surprised no one had done one before in the city. It’s the spiritual home of both shows, as most of the scenes are filmed there. We’re really proud to be able to bring the event to the city.”

Diffcon will take place from August 19th – 21st at the Merecure Hotel and include a costume competition, question and answer sessions with actors and writers, as well as a roleplay event.

Miss Swan said: “The roleplay is where fans write stories based on the two series and act out their version of events.”

Asked who was her favourite Doctor Who, Miss Swan answered with conviction.

She said: “David Tennant. There’s been none better in my opinion, maybe Peter Davidson was the best 80s Doctor but you can’t beat Tennant.

“I think the jury is still out on Matt Smith but I hope he can deliver.”

The event will be a boost to Doctor Who fans in the city after the BBC announced in March it was closing the series’ exhibition at the Red Dragon Centre. It will also be a help for Doctor Who tourism in Cardiff, with the locations tour – as reviewed by our very own Clare Hutchinson – already proving a big hit.

Lewis Swan, from BritMovieTours who organise the Doctor Who tour of Cardiff, said it would be a help for the city.

He said: “It’s nice to see a convention taking place outside London. I think it makes sense considering the connection between Cardiff and the two shows.

“It will be good news for us, and I hope lots of the people coming to the convention take the chance to do the tour. We might even put a special one on for them.”

Registration for tickets is available on the Diffcon website and Miss Swan said she was still working to confirm further acts for the festival.
