Howzat! Cricketers appeals to foodies

Popular Cardiff watering hole The Cricketers, on Cathedral Road, is vying to be named Britain’s best food pub after taking the Welsh title.

It has been judged the Best Food Pub in Wales by the influential industry magazine, The Publican’s Morning Advertiser.

Its owner, Simon Buckley, said: “The pub is in a great location in Cathedral Road and is proving hugely popular with customers old and new.

“We have strived to put the emphasis on quality in everything we do – from the food, to the service and the award-winning real ales we offer from our renowned Evan Evans brewery in Llandeilo.

“Excellence is the watchword at the Cricketers and the nomination for this national award reflects great credit on the team working under manager, Michelle Francis.”

The Cricketers fended off challenges from pubs across Wales to claim the title.

Michelle said: “I am thrilled that we have been judged the best food pub in Wales. Now, we’d like to win the national title as well so that the Cricketers helps to put Cardiff on the UK pub food map.”

Head chef Andy Aston, who only took over in June shortly before the judges visited, said the secret to success was an emphasis on good local suppliers and local produce.

He said: “It is a combination of the two which got us where we are. It is a pretty simple formula but you get the suppliers right and you can’t go far wrong.

“We are going to the nationals and to win would be amazing, but just to be in the mix is a real success.”

Independent judges visited all the competing pubs before selecting the recently re-opened Cardiff pub as the winner.

Morning Advertiser editor Paul Charity said: “The award recognises the pub with the best traditional pub food offering.

“The judges looked for evidence of the revenue generated by food sales and how this had been increased in the past 12 months.

“The Cricketers has a fantastic offer for its customers and is a worthy winner.”

The Cricketers will go forward to the Great British Pub Awards final at the Hilton hotel in London on September 8.

It will go head to head with seven other regional winners for the UK title Best Food Pub 2011 and will also have the opportunity to compete for the overall title of Great British Pub of the Year.

Too bad it doesn't care about the state of the kitchen the food is prepared in, 1/5 in it's most recent health inspection, yuck. I hope I don't get banned from there for bringing this to light…
