Welsh boxer Nathan Cleverly up for Cardiff 10k race

Welsh boxer Nathan Cleverly is stepping out of the ring and onto the streets of Cardiff to raise money for children.

It comes as plans are announced for Nathan to have his own Cardiff showdown with Bernard Hopkins at the Millennium Stadium next year if he defends the WBO light-heavyweight title against British rival Tony Bellew in Liverpool on October 15.

WBO light-heavyweight champion of the world Nathan will be back to pound the pavements in the Cardiff 10k on September 11 after his superb time in 2009.

Nathan, 23, from Caerphilly, has supported the race for the past three years and last year was supporting his girlfriend, Rebecca Cole, the reigning Miss Swindon, as she ran for Kidney Wales.

“I’ve supported Kidney Wales for a few years after being inspired by the hard work their supporters undertake to raise vital funds,” said Nathan, who is keen to lace up his running shoes and participate again this year.

“I attended the opening of the £100,000 refurbishment of the Kidney Wales Children’s Centre with Katherine Jenkins, which was funded by money raised from the Cardiff 10k,” he said.

“Two years ago I ran the race in 36 minutes. After missing a year, I’m hoping that in my comeback year I’ll run a personal best.”

The Cardiff 10k and 2k races will start and finish on King Edward VII Avenue and in the past has seen a host of famous faces taking part including singer Katherine, Alex Jones and Matt Johnson.

The majority of runners fundraise for Kidney Wales but organisers have partnered with more charities than ever before so that people can choose to fundraise for causes close to their hearts. These include Diabetes UK, Brainstrust and Tenovus.

Organiser of the Cardiff 10k and chairman of Kidney Wales, Roy J Thomas, said: “Nathan has been a great supporter for many years and has seen first hand how the money raised in the Cardiff 10k goes to support the children of the Kidney Wales Children’s Centre. We thank him for his continued support and wish him the best luck as he goes for a personal best in this year’s race.”

To join Nathan and the many other famous faces taking part in the race, register at www.cardiff10k.com or call 029 2034 3951. There will be no entry on the day.
