Queen Street reopened after police incident

PART of Cardiff’s Queen Street was closed for more than an hour this morning after a man appeared to threaten to jump off the roof of the Thistle Hotel.

South Wales Police cordoned off the city’s main shopping street from tReds clothes shop, at the junction with Park Place, to the Capitol shopping centre after a call at around 10am.

Police said a man was on the roof of the Thistle Hotel, and eye witnesses said he had called for help before emergency services – including a police negotiator – arrived.

Fire crews brought the man down from the roof using a crane ladder, and a police spokeswoman said he was safe and well at 11.04am. The road was reopened by 11.20am.

A spokesman for the Welsh Ambulance Service said the man was taken to the University Hospital of Wales as a precaution.

South Wales Police thanked the public for their co-operation during the incident.
