The world’s longest running Doctor Who quiz – based here in Cardiff – has kick started its own celebrations to mark 50 years of Doctor Who by tailoring each month’s quiz to correspond with a particular Doctor.
Hosted by Ioan Morris and Michael Williams, the Quiz of Rassilon is held every first Monday of the month at Buffalo Bar in Cardiff, with Whovians from all corners competing to win the coveted Trophy of Rassilon.
Competition is fierce – no team has ever managed to get full marks – but fortunately nobody’s been exterminated… yet.
Teams from all walks of Doctor Who fandom turn up to test their knowledge; from long-term classic series fans to cosplayers and YouTubers, even some of the programme’s production team.
“We’ve been fortunate enough to have the author of the Doctor Who Encyclopedia, Gary Russell, contribute questions as of late. Needless to say, they’re fiendishly difficult, but that’s how we like them”, says Michael.
“As it’s the programme’s 50th anniversary year, we’ve got some special guest question-setters lined up and, in true Doctor Who fashion, there may even be a returning villain. All of which will have to remain secret for now. Spoilers!” says Ioan
The Quiz, which recently celebrated its second birthday, appears to be going from strength to strength.
The hosts are both long serving fans of the renegade timelord, with Michael even appearing as an extra in a couple of episodes. He also works at the Doctor Who Experience.
The winners of the first Doctor Special in January was Team Kinda, made up of Ryan Farrell, Simon Watkins, Laura Blakemore, Phil Lewis, Rob Clarke and Ann Christin Marko.
The hosts promise a night of everything Doctor Who for both hardcore fans and new ones. You can expect the usual jokes, banter, cool prizes, quirky rounds and more Doctor Who trivia than you can shake a question marked umbrella at in next month’s event.
The quiz is held at the Buffalo Bar, 11 Windsor Place, and takes place on the first Monday of the month.
Doors open at 7.30pm, and the quiz will start at 8pm. Entry costs £1. Prizes vary from Forbidden Planet vouchers and bar tab give-aways to special one off prizes.
