Specialist officers resumed the hunt for missing Wales rugby fan Ben Thompson today as the search entered its second week.
Ben disappeared following Wales’ opening Six Nations fixture against Ireland on Saturday, February 2.
The 34-year-old vanished after watching the 22-30 defeat at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium.
Dozens of the cycling enthusiast’s friends, as well as members of his family, have travelled from his hometown of Haverfordwest to Cardiff to look for him.
But despite their efforts and the massive police operation which was subsequently launched, the gas plant worker has not been found.
Searchers looking for Ben were yesterday hampered by torrential rains with volunteers forced to take shelter in the Sand Martin pub in the Leckwith area of the city – which has become the unofficial search headquarters – while police scouring the River Ely were forced to abandon their efforts on Sunday due to strong currents.
But police divers and search boats were able to resume their search for the South Hook LNG worker today after conditions improved.
Having started at the south end of the former Ely Paper Mill site, the divers continued to search the 1km stretch of the river – which flows through the centre of the search area – down to where it is crossed by Leckwith Road.
Search advisor Owen Whittendale, who is leading the efforts, has previously said “nil visibility” and obstructions in the river have been hampering the divers’ progress.
Ben had been out with friends following the Ireland match and was last seen in the city at about 6.30pm, when he left the queue for a bar in Mill Lane on his own.
Around 45 minutes later he was spotted twice on Lawrenny Avenue, walking into the playing fields.
It is believed Ben could have been trying to walk west from the city to his hotel near Cardiff Airport.
Working on this theory, specialist officers have spent the last week searching playing fields at the end of Lawrenny Avenue and in Trelai Park, Plymouth Wood and Leckwith Woods.
The Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) has also thrown its weight behind the appeal to find Mr Thompson.
Ben is 5ft 9in tall, with short brown hair and blue eyes. He was last seen wearing brown leather lace-up boots, blue jeans and a white shirt with thin blue stripes.
